What Goes Into Choosing The Right Sump Pump

A basement sump pump is a pump that is designed to empty a water collecting sump basin.  These pumps and pits are common and in most cases necessary in homes that are built below the water table level.   A basement sump pump sends the accumulated water to a place where it will no longer be a problem, such as a dry well or a municipal storm drain.

If you are having water problems in your basement, one of the first things you should do is check to make sure that the problem is not a drainage problem outside of your basement.  you will want to check the gutters to make sure they are not clogged and that downspout extensions move roof runoff at least 4 feet from the foundation. Assuming that this is not the problem then you will need to install a basement sump pump.

The two basic types of sump pump are the pedestal and the submersible pump.  The pedestal pump has the motor mounted on top and the pump at the base, which sits at the bottom of the sump pit.  The pump is turned on and off by a ball float.   The submersible pump is designed to be fully submerged and sits on the bottom of the sump pit.  It usually has a mercury activated floating switch that is sealed and adjustable.

Choosing the horsepower for your basement sump pump is not that difficult.  In most cases a 1/3 horsepower pump will handle the drainage of the average house.  If you live in an area that is prone to flash flooding you may want to choose a 1/2 horsepower pump to keep up with any sudden rapid water flow.

One of the most important things to look for when choosing your sump pump is selecting one with a battery backup, in case of sustained power outages.   Because power outages are often caused by severe weather, that means when the power is out is when you will probably have the heaviest rainfall an accumulation of water in your sump pit.

Whatever your choice in basement sump pump, you should at least be familiar with some of the biggest brands in the market, such as Wayne, Little Giant, The Basement Watchdog, StormPro, Sumpro, and Zoeller Pump Co.
