Why Do I Need A Backup Sump?

The first line of defense against water problems in most homes is the sump pump.  A sump pump is a pump that is connected to the sump pit that collects excess rain water that drains into the basement.  As an added level of precaution, many homeowners choose to get a backup sump pump.   There are just a lot of things that can go wrong down in the sump pit. Whether its a failed sump pump, a stuck float switch, increased water flow that the pump cannot keep up with, or a power outage, the result is the same: flooded basement.

The Basement Watchdog has a wide rage of products, including several types of battery operated backup sump pump that will insure that your basement stays dry.  One of the reasons to look into The Basement Watchdog is that their systems are designed to monitor the battery, power conditions, and the pump and sound an alarm to tell you when maintenance is needed.   This is to prevent the most common cause of failure in a backup sump pump, which is that the battery is dead and the homeowner is unaware of it.

RadonSeal is another brand of backup sump pump that makes a quality pump that is reliable and has features that most homeowners can take comfort in.   The RadonSeal pump is fully automatic and will take over whenever the primary pump fails or cannot keep up, for whatever reason.  Another interesting feature about the RadonSeal backup sump pump is that its located outside of the sump pit to reduce the effects of grime and hard water and extend the life of the pump.

One major reason to have a backup sump pump is that most homeowners insurance does not cover the cost of basement flooding caused by ground water.   That means that for a one time investment you will, in effect, be purchasing inexpensive flood insurance, protection, and peace of mind.   There are two choices to make when deciding on your backup pump.  You can choose one that is battery operated which has the obvious benefit of working even in a power outage, or you can choose to go with a water operated pump which also works in the event of a power outage, but does not rely on a battery that may drain without the owner knowing.
